General Scope and Summary 

SAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, resourceful, integrative thinker for a highly visible role that is responsible for collaborating with other Medical Directors to lead medical strategy and real-life data generation activities for the depression franchise. The Senior Medical Director is responsible for providing subject matter expertise in development and execution of the strategic pre-approval and lifecycle tactical brand plans for Medical Affairs activities; this includes collaboration with Key National Opinion Leaders to guide medical strategy, as well as providing strategic guidance and oversight to field teams, early access, Phase 3b/4 clinical trial programs, and investigator initiated research (IIR). In addition, the Senior Medical Director will participate as a member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a group of depression franchise Medical Directors in support of medical strategic needs of brand programs.

  • Collaborate with the Preclinical, Clinical Development, and Medical Affairs teams to translate clinical insights and data gaps into medical strategy.

  • Cultivate partnerships with cross-functional partners such as Clinical Development, Translational Science, Discovery, Patient Safety, Regulatory, Operations, Program Management, and Marketing to provide medical leadership in support of relevant therapeutic and disease area initiatives.

  • Work closely with Medical Sciences and Clinical Operations to ensure optimal collaboration and inclusion of external clinicians/KOLs in clinical trial planning, enrollment, and interpretation.

  • Interact with various investigators, KOLs, research institutions, and internal Sage departments to oversee and facilitate Medical Affairs objectives and ensure the medical and scientific merit of company activities.

  • Support short and long-term goals of Medical Affairs with respect to prioritization of research interests and desired collaborations with specific investigators and institutions.

  • Provide oversight and leadership in review and approval of external resources, communication, and publications to ensure medical accuracy, objectivity, and fair balance.

  • Serve as a member of SMLR and PMRC,working with internal stakeholders at the initiation, creation, and review of educational and promotional materials.   • Collaborate,with Medical Directors on the planning and execution of advisory boards with healthcare providers (physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, etc.) to collect needed clinical insights to inform medical strategy.

  • Manage and regularly meet with a network of national thought leaders to support the successful execution of Medical Affairs tactics.

  • Represent Sage at various scientific and clinical congress meetings.

  • Interact with other departments, including Commercial, Clinical, Safety, Legal, and Regulatory.

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills, and the ability to analyze complex issues to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations. Must have a demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action, excellent analytical skills, and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks.

Basic Qualifications

  • MD, DO, or PhD/PharmD required.

  • 7+ years of industry experience as Medical Director and experience in psychiatry

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience navigating joint collaborations with biotech companies.

  • Prior experience developing strategic and tactical medical plans to support drug launch is highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated scientific leadership; ability to effectively collaborate and partner with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to set and maintain high standards in area of responsibility for self and team.

  • Excellent communication skills, relationship building capabilities, and proven ability to influence decision-making without authority.

  • Ability to manage and lead others through complex issues where there is no clear cut "right" answer and when there are conflicting needs within the organization.

  • Must be highly perceptive, socially intelligent, and intuitive.

  • Strong leadership skills, including a passion for working within multiple teams and proven ability to achieve results in a matrix organization.

Benefits and Compensation

The base salary hiring range for this position is $226,979 - $312,096.*

  • The actual salary offered within the range is dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, education, skills, and performance.
  • This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s annual bonus plan; the bonus varies based on performance and is subject to the standard terms and conditions of the incentive program.
