General Scope and Summary 
Sage Therapeutics is seeking a talented, dedicated, integrative thinker as a patent attorney/agent who will play a key role in shaping our rapidly growing IP portfolio. This high visibility position offers a broad range of responsibilities and a fantastic growth opportunity.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide clear and actionable intellectual property advice through all phases of patient-focused drug research, development, and commercialization.

  • Create and execute global IP strategies for Sage’s various pipeline assets.

  • Manage intellectual property risks within the Company’s programs and pipeline.

  • Assist with developing and streamlining IP policies and processes within Sage.

  • Partner with the Discovery team in identifying new inventions, conducting prior art searches, and providing IP counseling to internal projects.

  • Educate clients on important intellectual property issues and forge strong client relationships that leverage opportunities to identify, create, and protect valuable intellectual property.

  • Counsel company scientists on intellectual property and confidentiality issues and participate in research planning to generate supporting data for patent filings.

  • Provide IP support for business development deals and collaborations as needed.

  • Participate in the contracting process with respect to the IP aspects of various agreements for Discovery, Development, and Commercial functions.

  • Manage external relationships with outside counsel.

  • Review and oversee patent drafting and prosecution by external counsel.

  • Identify and manage IP litigation arising in portfolio.

  • Represent Sage in IP Committees relating to Sage’s collaboration.

  • Manage outside counsel to maintain prosecution docket and develop and implement strategies for US and foreign patent portfolios to strengthen and extend the company's intellectual property position.

  • Support contested proceedings (i.e., interference, reexamination, post-examination, and opposition proceedings) as they arise with prosecution.

  • Maintain expertise in patent law and practice.


Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills
The ideal candidate must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills, and the ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations. Must have a demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action, excellent analytical skills, and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry.

  • Patent Attorney or Patent Agent admitted to practice before US Patent and Trademark Office.

  • 6+ years of experience in drafting and prosecuting biotech/pharma patent applications; 4+ years of small molecule research experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience with law firm and/or pharma/biotechnology company.

  • Licensed and in good standing with a state bar.

  • Master’s or PhD in chemistry.

  • Understanding of US and European patent law, as well as major global patent jurisdictions.

  • Excellent patent preparation and prosecution skills.

  • Proven record of counseling clients in research and development and/or clinical research programs.

  • Advanced knowledge of domestic and international laws, regulations, and processes relating to patents.

  • Strong scientific acumen with a pragmatic business focus.

  • Creative, collaborative approach to problem solving.

  • Ability to clearly articulate IP concepts and strategies to non-lawyers.

  • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.

  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.

Benefits and Compensation

The base salary hiring range for this position is $200,605 - $275,832.*

  • The actual salary offered within the range is dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, education, skills, and performance.
  • This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s annual bonus plan; the bonus varies based on performance and is subject to the standard terms and conditions of the incentive program.
